Our History

The Butcher's Block Story

Robert H. Butcher, Jr. founded Butcher's Block & Building Materials on September 1, 1980. The company started out very small with only 2 employees, Bob Butcher being one of them. Since that time, the company has grown from a small lumber yard into one of the largest in the area. Bob Butcher worked hard running Butcher’s Block every day, until his untimely death in December of 2007. Butcher’s Block bought out an existing lumber company (Homestead Supplies) in June 1988 and branched out into a full retail hardware store and lumber yard that carries a full line of paint, plumbing and electrical supplies and now employees 30+ people.

Through hard work and dedication, we are proud of the company we are today. We are Big Bears only family owned and operated lumber yard and home center. Theela, Glenn, Buffey and Chad Butcher are all involved in the day-to-day operations. Bob and Theela, as well as their kids, Glenn and Amy, are all Big Bear High School graduates, making the Butcher family deeply rooted in this community. Their caring hearts for this town and the people is evident from the 100’s of sponsorships and support for youth and community programs over these decades. Many of our customers are longtime friends as well. We look forward to many more years of service to our community and great service for our customers!
