Sprinklers
There are several types of sprinklers on the market for different types of watering coverage. |
|
 |
|
Impact sprinklers release water in short bursts, spray farther than any other sprinkler and work on low water pressure. As a result, they can reach up to 100-ft. in diameter. A spring-loaded arm provides the stream of water close to the ground where it is needed most and also makes it wind-resistant. Most impulse sprinklers offer these advantages:
- Baffle plate controls the height of the stream to allow watering under low tree branches
- Diffuser pin controls the stream of the water from full jet to a fine mist
- Partial or full-circle operation

Rotary sprinklers have two or three arms that whirl around to spray water to the area specifications of your yard. Designed for watering small- to medium-sized areas, rotary sprinklers vary in size and cost. Deluxe units provide three watering adjustments:
1. Mist or jet spray by turning the nozzles
2. Spray diameter by swiveling the nozzles in or out
3. Stationary watering by the use of a locking collar |

| Oscillating sprinklers release water in a rectangular pattern that sprays out of tiny openings in a curved metal arm. The arm oscillates back-and-forth to water medium to large areas. Important features that affect performance include the length of the tube, the number of spray openings (usually 13-19 as coverage increases), and if the tube has spray jet nozzles that control the jet of water for a longer throw. Coverage varies from 1,600 sq. ft. up to 4,000 sq. ft depending on the sprinkler. Pattern adjustments are usually full sweep, left, right or center. By design, they place more water at the end of the spray pattern than in the middle. |

| Stationary (spot) sprinklers usually cost less than other models of sprinklers on the market. Use this type of sprinkler on smaller lawn or garden areas to water quickly and effectively. They spray water through a pattern of holes that are in the top of the unit. The size, shape, and pattern of these holes determine the size and shape (square, rectagular, circular) of the area that will be covered. |

Traveling sprinklers are self-propelled to cover large, irregular areas. There are basically two different types:
- Wind-up units that follow a cord laid out by the user, have two speeds and large hose capacity
- Tractor units that drag the hose behind them as they follow the hose pattern.
Deluxe models are heavier for a greater range and have two speeds. The sprinkler waters by two arms (like a rotary sprinkler which can be adjusted to change) the width of watering. They are the most expensive type of sprinkler, but cover an area as large as 20,000 sq.ft. |
