Garden shovels can be classified by their type of construction, head description and handle length. There are several different types of construction; they can either have a square or round-point head. The handles are defined as long (47"-49") or "D" (27"-30") and are important to balance and efficient shoveling. A forged "D" is typical on some models at the end of the shovel handle for easy carrying or storage. Use a shovel for lifting and digging dirt and moving it to another place in the yard.
Long-handled round head shovels are forged as a single unit with the blade and the front strap as one together. Quality shovels are made of chrome nickel alloy steel, whereas less sturdy shovels are made of carbon steel. Most have a rolled or turned foot pedal on the top of the blade for your foot to rest on when pushing into the ground for general purposes. Its round pointed head provides easier entry into even compacted dirt and the concave blade makes it easier for moving soil.
Long-handled square head shovels are constructed from similar materials as round head shovels. However, a square head has less cutting power into the ground surface but is great to use for scooping and removing materials such as loose soil, compost, gravel, or mulch, Do not use this as a digging tool in the garden.
"D"-handle round head shovels are available in the same materials as long handled shovels and are available from light to heavy duty weights. Because the handle is shorter they are recommended for ordinary garden digging jobs, even in compacted dirt.
"D"-handle square head shovels are available in the same materials as long handled shovels and are available from light to heavy duty weights. They are recommended for removal of loose soil and handling light materials such as sand and asphalt, but not for heavy digging.
